The basics

How does a vehicle speedometer work?

A vehicle needs a speed signal to know how fast it is travelling. Depending on the vehicle, that signal is generated either mechanically or electronically — and the fault-finding is completely different for each. This is the first thing our technicians identify.

1. Mechanical speedometer systems

Older vehicles and many commercial vehicles use a mechanical speedometer cable. A speed sensor or drive on the gearbox rotates as the vehicle moves. That rotation is carried up the cable to the speedometer, which converts it into a speed reading while the odometer records distance travelled.

2

3
Speedometer cableInner cable spins inside the outer sheath
4

If it stops working, the cause is usually a broken gearbox speed sensor, a snapped or worn speedometer cable, a worn drive mechanism, or a faulty speedometer/odometer head. Tacho Services can supply replacement gearbox speed senders and source the correct speedometer cable for your vehicle.

2. Electronic speedometer systems

Modern vehicles use an electronic speed signal instead of a cable. A speed sensor on the gearbox, transmission, differential or another drivetrain point produces a stream of electrical pulses as the vehicle moves. The speedometer counts those pulses and calculates road speed — and the same signal feeds the odometer, ECU, cruise control and other systems.

2
Electronic pulsePulses generated per wheel revolution
3
Wiring & connectorsSignal carried to the cluster
4
Instrument clusterPulses converted to km/h and km

If it stops working, the fault could be the speed sensor itself, the wiring, the pulse signal, a pulse generator, corroded connectors, or the speedometer. We assist with electronic speed sensors, speed pulse generators, wiring and replacement speedometer solutions.

Distance recording

How does an odometer work?

The odometer counts the same speed signal the speedometer uses — it simply adds it up over time instead of showing it as an instant reading.

  • Mechanical odometers use a worm-gear drive off the spinning speedometer cable to turn a set of numbered drums. Each drum flips the next one over at every full turn.
  • Electronic odometers count speed-sensor pulses, multiply by the calibration factor for your tyre and diff ratio, and store the total in the cluster memory.
  • GPS odometers calculate distance from satellite position, so they work even when the vehicle has no usable speed signal at all.

Because both instruments share one signal source, a speedometer that has died usually takes the odometer with it. Fix the signal and both come back to life.

What we fix

Speedometer repair & replacement solutions

There is not always one single solution to a broken speedometer. Our technicians identify how your vehicle generates its speed signal, then recommend the most suitable repair or replacement.

Gearbox speed sensors

Faulty or missing gearbox speed sensor? We help source and fit the replacement. We identify suitable OEM or aftermarket gearbox speed sensors and speed senders for your application, including heavy commercial vehicles.

Speedometer cables

On cable-driven vehicles a broken, kinked or worn inner cable stops the speedo and the odometer dead. We assist with ordering replacement speedometer cables between the gearbox speed sender and the speedometer head.

Electronic speed pulse generators

Where your vehicle needs an electronic speed signal, we supply speed pulse generators, pulse meters and signal converters. Especially useful when the original sensor or signal system is simply no longer available.

VDO speedometers & gauges

We assist with VDO speedometers, gauges and replacement speedometer components depending on your vehicle and application — whether you need an original-style replacement gauge or a compatible aftermarket unit.

No sensor? No problem.

What if there is no speed sensor or connection point?

We have solutions for vehicles where the original speed signal is missing, damaged or impossible to source. Our GPS speed solutions install a completely independent speedometer and odometer system that calculates speed from satellite positioning instead of the gearbox.

Standalone GPS speedometer & odometer

A modern solution where the original system cannot easily be repaired. We install a standalone GPS speedometer with an integrated odometer, creating a brand-new independent speed measurement system.

  • No usable gearbox speed sensor
  • Original speedometer cable unavailable
  • Original electronic speed signal missing
  • Vehicle has been modified or rebuilt
  • Instrument cluster is faulty
  • A reliable independent speed signal is needed

Keep your original speedo — GPS signal converters

You do not always need to replace the speedometer you already have. We also supply GPS-to-speedometer signal converters that generate a compatible electronic speed signal from GPS data, letting you keep your existing gauge while replacing the vehicle's original speed source.

GPS antennaReads satellite position
2
Signal converterBuilds a matching pulse output
3
Your existing speedoReads km/h and counts km again

Ideal for older vehicles, custom builds, restorations and any vehicle where the original gearbox speed signal is no longer available.

GPS speed solutions can be fitted to virtually any vehicle, subject to the specific application and installation requirements. Send us your vehicle details on WhatsApp and we will confirm what will work.

Questions

Speedometer & odometer FAQs

Quick answers to what we get asked most. Anything else — WhatsApp us on 084 502 3661.

Why has my speedometer stopped working?

On cable-driven vehicles it is usually a snapped speedometer cable, a worn gearbox drive or a failed speedo head. On electronic vehicles it is most often the gearbox or transmission speed sensor, its wiring and connectors, or the instrument cluster itself. The only way to be sure is to test where the speed signal stops — which is exactly what our auto electricians do.

My odometer stopped counting but the speedo still works. Is that possible?

Yes. On mechanical clusters the odometer drive gears can strip while the speedometer mechanism keeps working. On electronic clusters the odometer stage or its memory can fail on its own. In both cases the cluster itself needs attention rather than the speed sensor — send us the vehicle details and we will advise.

Can you fix a speedometer if the original sensor is no longer available?

Yes. This is one of the most common reasons customers come to us. If the original gearbox sender is obsolete we can fit an electronic speed pulse generator, a GPS-to-speedometer signal converter that feeds your existing gauge, or a fully independent GPS speedometer with its own odometer.

How accurate is a GPS speedometer?

A GPS speedometer calculates speed from satellite positioning rather than gearbox rotation, so it is not affected by worn drivetrain parts, tyre size changes or diff ratio changes. That makes it a reliable independent speed and distance source for vehicles that have been modified or where the original signal cannot be trusted.

Do you work on trucks and tractors as well as cars?

We do. We supply tachograph speed sensors, connector kits and heavy-duty senders for commercial vehicles and fleets, and GPS speedo and odo systems are a popular fix on tractors and plant equipment where the original instruments are obsolete.

Is a working speedometer required to be road legal in South Africa?

A functioning speedometer is part of a roadworthy vehicle and is checked at roadworthy testing. An accurate odometer also matters for service intervals, fleet records, warranty claims and resale value. Getting both working again is usually a straightforward parts-and-fitment job.

How do I know which part I need?
